What Educators Need to Know:
Once upon a time, in a land not so far away… I taught first grade while working on my Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology. I stumbled upon a free resource entitled Starfall. I submitted my registration info into its website, and I received a series of high-quality workbooks for each of my students. The idea was to utilize the website to help my students learn to read while simultaneously working in their workbooks.

Fast forward 10 years later. Starfall is a primary-based website force to reckoned with. Strike that. It is also now a series of apps, and they do not disappoint.

If you are working with pre-readers, start with Starfall ABCs. My little D absolutely loves it. Clicking on a letter of the alphabet leads the learner to a series of animations. Little D delights in tapping and dragging while watching silly scenarios and playing simplistic games. He is learning the difference between upper and lowercase letters and has easily acquired the sounds that many make.

Those unfamiliar with tablets watch in awe as he swipes and taps away. There are so many apps out there claiming to “teach” little ones how to use their devices. Don’t waste your money. Start here, and your toddler will figure it out very quickly. There is enough to motivate even the youngest learners. And the foundation that Starfall ABCs provides is invaluable.

Still not convinced? Check out http://www.starfall.com to see for yourself. All of the activities included in the app are free via the website. Plus, there are many printable resources that pre-K and Kindergarten teachers can access for free. What are you waiting for? Browse, download, print, but don’t miss out. This is good stuff!
